  • The collaboration follows the launch of SoftSIM in November 2022; SoftSIM is the world’s first 100% software-based and vendor-agnostic IoT SIM.
  • Fully downloadable from the cloud, SoftSIM for SIMCom reduces power consumption of devices in idle mode, lowering bill of materials and total cost of ownership saving money and resource.

COPENHAGEN, Denmark; 22/02/23 – The Internet of Things (IoT) is central to the convergence of the digital and physical worlds, and has the potential to enable up to $12.6 trillion in value globally by 2030. But while the potential is considerable, realising it has proved a challenge.

Many barriers to adoption exist today, including controlling costs, skill shortages, and time to deployment, but one of the major challenges to progress has been interoperability across the ecosystem. Interoperability is crucial to extracting maximum impact from the IoT, but current technology stacks are mostly fragmented and siloed.

Despite advances on the hardware and cloud side, the connectivity component has remained a siloed member of the ecosystem dependent on legacy telecoms infrastructure, which has hindered interoperability. This is why Onomondo has sought to rethink what’s possible within IoT connectivity through its latest innovation – SoftSIM – and a new collaboration with SIMCom.

Announced last year at the Made for IoT Summit, SoftSIM is the world’s first 100% software and agnostic IoT SIM. Unlike eSIMs, or eUICC, there is no hardware or chips required. By reusing modules that already exist on IoT devices, Onomondo’s IoT SIM can be stored and executed as pure software. For users, this means no hidden lock-ins or unnecessary costs thanks to Onomondo’s operator-agnostic approach.

By integrating SoftSIM with A7672X, SIMCom’s LTE Cat 1 module, those looking to deploy and scale IoT deployments will now have access to a plug-and-play connectivity solution, which is pre-enabled from the manufacturing line. By making it easier for collaboration between the connectivity and hardware layers of the IoT ecosystem, SoftSIM for SIMCom is not only radically simplifying the manufacturing process and time-to-deployment, but also dramatically reducing the overall Bill-of-Materials (BoM).

Commenting on the news, Mads Fischer, Europe Sales Director at SIMCom, said: “We have long recognised the need for different parties from the IoT ecosystem to work more closely together. The connectivity element has always felt as though we were trying to fit a square peg in a round hole, and was lagging behind the progress being made elsewhere, particularly on the cloud side. But SoftSIM breaks down these barriers, allowing key players like us on the hardware side to provide a better end-to-end solution for our users. For any of our customers looking to adopt faster, while reducing costs, this partnership is really the next step in achieving this at scale.”

Onomondo has spent a number of years rethinking existing IoT connectivity architecture by integrating more than 700 operators at the Radio Access Network (RAN) level across more than 180 countries. On top of its global IoT network, Onomondo has built a suite of powerful tools to help the user develop, deploy, and operate at scale. As a result, SoftSIM is entirely different from other so-called eSIMS or iSIMs available today, as it completely removes the SIM chip from the equation.

Michael Karlsen, co-founder and CEO at Onomondo added: “The IoT market has almost been conditioned to think of connectivity as something that needs to be designed around and ‘made to fit’, which has become the status quo and normalised. But when we tell users that they can double their devices’ lifetime, half battery consumption, drive down debugging time, and cut costs, all from functionality within the network itself, that’s when everyone starts to realise that the siloed nature of what went before wasn’t working. And through collaborations with players like SIMCom this vision can be brought fully to life and we can forge a new path for interoperability across the ecosystem.”

Last year, Onomondo announced a new $21m growth investment led by Verdane, a leading growth equity investment firm that specialises in scaling digital consumer, software, and sustainable society businesses. Onomondo will leverage the new funds to drive growth and meet its planned projection of tripling its ARR in 2022 and 2023. The company also plans to scale its team from 50 to 100 over the next year, helping to expand its customer base, which currently includes the likes of Bosch, Carlsberg, and Maersk.

ABOUT SOFTSIM

SoftSIM is downloaded from the cloud and reuses the already existing microcontroller on IoT devices, which can be either on the modem/radio-module or on the microcontroller running the embedded operating system, allowing the SIM to be stored and executed as pure software. This means that they can continue to do the work they do within trusted environments, e.g. ARM’s TrustZone, TPMs (Trusted Platform Module). Find out more about SoftSIM on our SoftSIM product page.

ABOUT SIMCom

Founded in 2002, SIMCom has been committed to providing a variety of cellular wireless modules and solutions including 5G, 4G, LPWA, LTE-A, smart module, automotive module, 3G, 2G and GNSS more than 20 years. With more than 5,000 square meters of top-notch 5G laboratory,a senior R&D team of nearly 1,000 professionals and more than 500 global technology patents, SIMCom maintains it role as the leader in the global IoT module industry, providing advanced products and high quality services to more than 10,000 customers across 180 countries and regions.
