How Clevertrack paves the way for sustainable and cost-saving fleet tracking with Onomondo
Clevertrack is reducing fuel waste and emissions across construction fleets by giving contractors real-time visibility into how their machines are used. Onomondo’s connectivity is what keeps that data moving.
"Onomondo's global cellular platform lets our devices connect to any available operator and automatically switch when the signal conditions change. That gives us the reliability we need for real-time updates even in remote or cross-border environments.  "
Mike Bonet ClarAbout Clevertrack: Sustainable construction operations
Clevertrack is reshaping construction operations with a SaaS platform and IoT devices that monitor machinery usage, fuel consumption, and emissions. With thousands of devices already deployed in Denmark and now scaling to Europe, Clevertrack assists contractors and industries with heavy offroad machinery in making their fleets more efficient and sustainable.
One core challenge they are working on is waste from diesel-powered machinery. Excavators, wheel loaders, and dump trucks frequently idle for extended periods of time, consuming fuel, emitting harmful emissions, and wearing out engines without doing any work. Aside from the cost, idling causes significant pollution, with cold engines emitting far more nitrogen oxides (NOx) than warm ones. In fact, construction machinery is estimated to emit approximately 1.1% of the world’s CO2, about 400 million tonnes, roughly comparable to the total emissions from global aviation [1].
Clevertrack’s system brings the spotlight on this issue. The platform provides actionable insights by consolidating fragmented data from various machine types and brands, allowing businesses to reduce unnecessary fuel consumption, lower emissions, and improve working conditions for operators.
Challenge: Real-time visibility on device performance
When Clevertrack launched in 2020, co-founder and CEO Mike Bonet Clar was well aware of these inefficiencies. He discovered that, despite high operating costs, few companies had reliable methods for measuring idling across their diverse fleets. Each manufacturer (CAT, Volvo, Liebherr, Komatsu, and others) collected data in different ways, making unified tracking nearly impossible without costly custom systems or in-house expertise.
This lack of visibility created significant waste. Machines could often run for hours at a time with engines on, despite being stationary. Beyond wasted fuel and wear on engines, this practice released excess CO2 and NOx emissions into the atmosphere. For companies trying to meet sustainability goals and keep costs predictable, the inability to measure and reduce idling effectively was a serious barrier.
Clevertrack’s devices and software finally solved that problem. Their device is a fixed IoT tracker powered directly by the machine it’s mounted on. It connects to the machine’s internal computer through the CAN bus, collecting data on the engine and fuel consumption data across different brands and feeding it into a unified platform. By providing a single, machine-agnostic platform for real-time tracking, companies could see exactly how their machines were being used, identify costly idle patterns, and act on data that had previously been locked away in separate systems.
Solution: A reliable connectivity partnership enabling predictability
Reliable connectivity is what makes Clevertrack’s service possible. Their devices need to transmit location and usage data every minute, and any disruption could compromise the accuracy of insights provided to customers. For Mike, who came from a decade in the telecom industry, selecting the right partner was critical.
Their team’s requirements were clear:
- Connectivity had to work seamlessly across borders
- Operator agnostic with freedom for the device to automatically use the strongest signal
- Uptime had to be reliable
- Costs had to be predictable
With expansion into The Faroe Islands, Sweden, Germany, and other markets already on the roadmap, their devices also had to scale without adding complexity.
Onomondo delivered on all of these needs. Its global cellular platform gives Clevertrack devices the ability to connect to any available operator, automatically switching cell towers when signal drops. This flexibility ensures reliable minute-by-minute updates, whether a machine or vehicle is operating in a remote Danish quarry or on a site in the Faroe Islands.
Equally important was Onomondo’s approach to pricing: simple SIM charges with no hidden data markups. That transparency offered the budget security Clevertrack needed to grow quickly without being exposed to surprise costs.
“The fact that Onomondo SIMs come preactivated with no fees before first connection means we do not have to worry about when to activate devices in stock waiting for deployment which is standard in the telco industry.”
– Mike Bonet Clar, Co-founder and CEO, Clevertrack
Solution: A reliable connectivity partnership enabling predictability
Once Clevertrack chose Onomondo, deployment was straightforward. After lab testing, SIMs were installed and devices were ready to just connect on customer sites. As Mike describes it, the devices “just work” when powered on, a frictionless setup that eliminates the need for lengthy onboarding processes or local network adjustments.
Onomondo’s platform has since become an invisible but vital part of Clevertrack’s operations. The network powers more than 4,500 devices in the field, handling continuous data flows with the resilience needed for real-time tracking. Using 4G LTE Cat 1 with 2G fallback, devices stay online even in remote or cross-border environments, ensuring companies can rely on uninterrupted updates.
Troubleshooting has also been simplified. Without telecom engineers on staff, Clevertrack relies on Onomondo’s Signaling Logs to quickly identify whether an issue originates from the device or the operator’s network. As Mike puts it, “I didn’t know I would need Signaling Logs, but having a platform that gave us that quick view has been extremely helpful.” By empowering Clevertrack’s support team to resolve connectivity issues in-house, Onomondo has allowed them to focus on product innovation instead of network complexities.
The API integration adds another layer of transparency. Clevertrack now shows customers their real-time connectivity status directly inside its platform, reinforcing trust and accountability. And with predictable pricing, annual firmware updates can be delivered without budget surprises, enabling continuous product improvements that benefit both Clevertrack and its customers.
The results speak for themselves: each machine equipped with Clevertrack’s solution saves companies an average of 24,000 kr (~€3,200) per year and reduces CO2 emissions by nearly one ton annually, with high-idle machines seeing reductions of up to 2.74 tons.
A foundational partnership for a sustainable future
For Clevertrack, Onomondo is more than a vendor, it is a foundational partner that has enabled their vision from day one. The ability to select the right connectivity solution early meant that Clevertrack could scale confidently, expanding across Europe without revisiting critical infrastructure decisions.
Mike thinks that choice was very important: “We had the gift of choosing right the first time.” Clevertrack can focus on providing long-term solutions instead of worrying about connectivity or surprise charges.
Beyond the choice in connectivity, Clevertrack is in a good place to grow quickly across Europe by giving contractors a method to save money, make machines last longer, and reduce environmental impact. Together, the partnership shows how connectivity can power real progress toward a more sustainable and cost-efficient construction industry.
